Lessons for My Inner Fat Girl
By CocoaDiva on Sep 29, 2009 with Comments
I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I come from a family where healthy eating was never a thought and where my mother uttered these famous words on a continuous basis, “What, do you have sugar fear? Add a few more cups to that Kool-Aid” and “Fat-Free, I want all my fat right now, please and thank you.” I never knew how to eat properly or what was a real serving size until, maybe, three years ago when my mother passed and I began to take control of my health. I have lost about 50 ish pounds and only have about 15 – 20 more pounds to go but wanted to share how I keep my inner fat girl on a tight leash.
My inner fat girl is my old friend. She is always there and is like that nagging bad kid in the back of the class urging you to cut up or cut class. Because she has been around so long, I will never shake her but I have kicked her butt a few times and taught her a thing or two.
1. Exercise is your friend – I know you hate exercise, and think running is for suckers, buuut weight will not move until you put your feet to the pavement. Once you develop a routine and stick to it exercise actually becomes fun and your body starts to miss that adrenaline rush. No, you don’t have to kill yourself and run 5 miles every day but starting slow and building up strong wins the race. Diet alone won’t cut it and you need exercise to build a healthy foundation. So, we WILL be working out 3-4 times a week…no matter how you grumble. Exercise is best when you do what you love, not what someone tells you you must do. So yes, we are trying dancing and running….hey maybe even a pole -dancing class or two.
2. Snacks are alright in moderation -I know you love your cookies, bread, pasta, and all the tomfoolery that clogs your arteries as soon as you put it in your mouth. There is nothing wrong with that, just not every day or every meal. Carbs are not your friend, they are like that boyfriend who talks sweet to you and then you find out he is dating your best friend, they are only good for the moment. So pick a meal and eat a little. Grab a 100 calorie pack, buy snack sized Oreo’s instead of the entire package that you know you can polish in a 2 days max. Its ok to eat them but not to go to town like the last supper.
3. Water is your homeboy-Yes its tasteless, no its not fizzy or pretty, but its good for you. It flushes out toxins and helps beat that pesky water weight you continuously struggle with. Yes, you really do need those 64 ounces a day and 100 is even better. Soda rots your teeth, diet is a joke and you are only harming your progress by not drinking enough. Plus it makes for pretty skin, nails, and hair, you sexy thang you.
4. Its OK to lose slowly -Slow and steady wins the race. As long as you are on a path to good health and wellness, its ok if you only lose 4 pounds this month, hey you may have put on a few pounds of muscle. So no whining and complaining and asking for snacks. Check out those new skinny jeans you just fit into or how you now wear a size 8 instead of 16. Every size was a victory, don’t cheat yourself complaining about how slowly it is going.
5. Plan ahead or plan to fail - you know you need to eat 5-6 times a day. I won’t let you eat 2 times and mess with your metabolism. You know where you are going and can pack a snack. Don’t go to town while ordering out just because everyone else is. You know your goals stick to them. Yes, I am keeping protein handy to shut you up when you pass buy any unhealthy food.
Its OK to be the Thick Girl – But don’t let the Thick Girl define who you are-I know you became so used to hearing, comments about how my your parts related to food…Ie being thicker than a Snicker, biscuits, hot cakes, etc. you get the picture, that you let myself believe that thick was all you would ever be….and thick slowly turned into fat. Size doesn’t define you, you define you. You can be healthy, energetic, and free from some of the health problems that plague you when you are overweight. So eat your celery because we have come so far, yet miles to go before we sleep.
Hope my lessons to my inner fat girl help you combat yours. Keep her on a tight leash but let her go out and play with the other fat kids every so often….then she won’t take over and sabotage your plans!
