BerryBella Week 3 Weightloss Chronicles

I knew it was coming. D-day otherwise known as diet day. For the next 3 months I would be limited to low fat high quality food. So the week before D-day I went for it. Popeye’s fried chicken – dark meat. Turkey burger with cheese. Philly cheesesteak with waffle fries. And ice cream every night. Now, I know what you are thinking. No wonder she needs to lose weight. The fact is that I normally don’t eat that way. It was the anticipation of deprivation that did me in.

So, I ate all the bad stuff with the hope that I would not crave it once D-day arrived. Here it is and I have given no thought to what I will be eating this week. That, I would later discover, would be the kiss of death.

I am using SparkPeople, an online tool to monitor my diet and nutrition. So far I have come to realize that I don’t eat enough. Yeah, it’s a myth that fat people are big because they over eat. I shouldn’t be surprised though. I did the Jenny Craig program years ago and they told me same thing. I was never hungry on Jenny Craig and often did not eat all of my assigned calories.

Of course it seems like I am eating a lot but each day as I look at my day’s nutrition summary I see that I am short on calories but high in carbs. This is mostly fueled by soda. Ah-ha! That explains a lot. I am striving to break the soda habit, but one step at a time. Here is a secret that a lot of people don’t know – ginger ale has fewer calories than most sweetened drinks.

Another positive is that I stopped drinking alcohol which is also carb heavy. Here is an extra bonus secret for those who indulge: choose a liquor that will mix well with club soda and always get it on the rocks. Cuts calorie and carbs down significantly.

Going forward I have become more conscious of my food choices. A trip to Trader Joe’s resulted in my kitchen being stocked with a couple of week’s worth of protein-rich foods. I’ve also started keeping 100 calorie snacks in my bag when I go out so I can eat those instead of something with less nutritional value – like a rich and delicious chocolate cupcake.

The first couple of weeks have been about figuring out what works best for my lifestyle. I think I’ve got an idea now, but consistency is key.

As for exercise, I did my first 5K walk-run! OK, so it was mostly walking, but I did it and want to do more. Still haven’t hit the gym, but I will. Plan is to keep gym clothes at work and walk over before heading. Still recovering from the 5K. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it. Now is the time and I am ready to make it happen. I just need to make it a habit and keep the momentum going.
