Week 2: NYLA Southerner’s Weight Loss Journey

It’s week 2 and boy what a week it has been. . .

It seems like my life manifest in my eating. When things are going well, I eat well– more healthy. When things are going not so well, then my eating is the first thing that falls apart (with exercising a close second). The quest for eating helathy and exercising as an integral part of my life is certainly a hard up hill climb. Somedays I wish I was already done with it. You know, when your habits are already formed so most of the time you pick uip something healthy that the right portion and carbohydrate/protein/fat ratio versus something’s total unhealthy that makes your sugar content go through the roof and you crash the second after you are done eating it. When you have “arrived” and not thinking about weight or fat. Moreover, when you have “arrived” and exercising is like brushing your teeth– everyday without fail even if you are running 15 or so minutes late to the office. You wouldn’t dare run out without brushing your teeth and even if you did, you will atleast put mouth wash in your mouth, use your spare toothbrush & toothpaste you have at your desk (from that last lunch hour dentist visit) and make sure you are mouth is smelling and lookings its bestest. . .

Since I want to be more reflective and make lasting changes to healthy eating, the culprit of this week was late night eating. It wasn’t like I was scarfing down some Doritos or oreos. I was at business meeting that lasted until 1 a.m. or later– at a Japanese restaurant. My goal is to eat at home (prepared meals by moi that saves $$) and then head over to my meetings. Nevertheless, my team members love to order. I’m glad they do, but I get in the mood of being about the business and going home. Food (as much as I like it) causes longer meetings and time where my will power is not strong enough to resist temptation. Thereby, I indulge in late night eating, which then technically puts my sleep 2 hours after that last meal. So, if I ate at 12:30 a.m., I shouldn’t go to sleep until after 2:30 a.m. Plus, if I give myself a 5:45 a.m. wake up call to exercise at least 20 minutes but up to 1 hour, then I would have had about 3 hours and 15 minutes worth of sleep. So, who wins? Sleep (which is a good thing), but my body didn’t get the adrenaline that physical activity can give me that can sustain me through long days.

So, what did I do that was positive? I didn’t give up. I’m pressing toward the goal, the higher mark. I saw a plan on fittnes.com about dropping a jean size in 4 weeks. It may seem far fetch, but what do I have to loose than to try it (outside of pounds an inches). Can I make some changes to my work schedule? Yes, I can. I have mentioned and suggested to my business partners about working from home so I can get proper sleep. Also, I hint on eating before we get to meetings so only thing we need to do is get down to business and then depart.

I guess there are pluses and minuses for living in a social city where everyone wants to sit and chat with you over a meal. The fun challenge I have to navigate is that no to food doesn’t mean no to the conversation or the request to be social. It just means I’m full. I don’t want any more of your heavy rich foods. I’m not complaining, but I do wish there were more healthier vegetarian or wholed foods choices in the city like some other places I have lived.

With all of that being said, I just gained 0.2 lbs. However, I started aunt flo, so it could be just all water weight I’ve gained. I guess next week , (hopefully), you will get a better picture of how my eating and exercising habits are improving.

Happy Trails!!!
