Week 1 – MagnoliaGirl (Weightloss Chronicles)

Slow and steady is going to have to win this race…
Last Wednesday (8/12) marked my 5th complete week with the Weight Watchers plan. As a rule, my loss has been slow but steady ranging from .4 to 2.4 lbs./week. Last week I only lost .4 lbs. I can blame it on the deadlines I faced and sitting on my butt the entire weekend working, but really the whole point of this is to be able to fit the plan into my life. Since I am a procrastinator, that means there will be times when I’m working hard – not smart – and I still need to stick within my points and get on that elliptical in my den. I also did a lot of worrying because I faced another barrier – work travel (with a day of pleasure). So here’s what was in my head last Tuesday night.
I’m worried about potential weight gain this week and living with the plan because work is taking me to El Paso and Phoenix. I eat guacamole at every meal when I’m in the Southwest. It’s not necessarily bad for my heart with all those great omega 3s but terribly high in calories. I think I have a plan. I have a John Deere lunch pail that’ll hold 6 peaches and plums, some kashi bars, and lemon ginger tea bags. This’ll be my breakfast and potentially my dinner on my travel day since I have no clue what Delta will be serving for dinner that night. If I eat the bar and fruit for breakfast, I’ll be full and I’ll save points I normally eat at the beginning of the day for guac at the end of the day.
So fast forward to me looking back at the trip. First, I lucked out because Delta served a bowl of fruit, pasta salad (no dressing other than juice from veggies) and a few slices grilled chicken. I had a glass of white wine with it and the brownie and coffee at the end of the meal were a good cap to a pretty stressful day. I also made good food choices in El Paso. We even picked up mangoes, prickly pears, and avocados at a roadside stand near one of our site visits. I found myself eating meals high in veggies and seafood, instead of cheese. I did have my requisite guacamole with every meal. I also used the very nice hotel gym. On to Phoenix. Again, I ate within my points, except Sunday morning. I had my favorite breakfast at this hotel and nothing about it is low in points. I didn’t at all feel bad about it because I was up at 6:30 that morning exercising (anything later and I would have been scorched on the trail I was on) and frankly if I can’t treat myself sometimes, then I’ll never stick with this. Also, it’s not like I find myself able to get this particular breakfast unless I’m at that hotel 3 time zones from my house. WW gives you some additional points to play with each week. I just assumed Sunday I played all day. I worried about being a party pooper to my colleague and travel companion. We both enjoy different types of food and plain good cooking. She said I was okay. Strangely enough, it wasn’t the trip that derailed me, because I was prepared. I took a red eye home and went directly to work on Monday morning. I didn’t have a plan for my meals and I was tired, so I didn’t cook and didn’t exercise. That being said, at this week’s meeting (8/19) I recorded a weight loss of .8 lbs. Not bad for me. Also not great. Next week, I’ll write a little more about the plan. I’ll also write about how I handled the week of celebrations for various people’s bdays, including mine.
