In Love With My Natural

Love Your Hair

Love Your Hair

So, as most of you know, I have been natural now for an entire year.  I transitioned using a weave for a year and then have been rocking my perm free hair for a year.  Don’t get me wrong, it has been a slight struggle learning about my hair and finding the products that work best for me.  But, it has been well worth the trip.  Here are a few tips for those of you contemplating going natural, those who are new, and those who have been natural for years.  Feel free to add any of your own personal tips.

1. Love Your Hair - Every natural beauty is different.  Some may have big curls, deep waves, or kinky locs.  Don’t wish for another’s tresses.  The longer you search for what you don’t have or try out products that don’t fit your hair type, the more damage you will do to your hair.  Once you love YOUR hair the natural transition becomes that much easier.  You can also achieve the curly look if you want through styles created while wet, including Bantu knots, two strand twists and more.

2. Expensive Isn’t Always Best – So you want to use only juices and berries on your hair.  That is fine but realize that grocery store or over the counter products work just as well as those expensive products you buy offline.  Recently, my hair has never looked, the breakage has slowed drastically.  I use Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Conditioner, Shea Butter and Mango Cholesterol, Cantu Shea Butter and Olive Oil Moisturizer, Oyin Handmade Greg Juice, and Shea Butter for my ends.  3/4 of these products can be found at your local grocery store or Walmart and are under $5.  Oyin can be found online and costs only $11 ( I will write a review shortly when I try the Juices and Berries version).  I have recieved more compliments when using these products than I have with all of my magic hair potions.

3. Moisture, Moisture, Moisture - Natural hair ( and Relaxed hair for that matter) requires a lot of moisture to retain its elasticity, shine, and remain healthy, especially during the summer months.  Find the best moisture for your hair.  My hair loves Shea Butter as a sealant for my ends.  In the hot Las Vegas weather, my mane remains shiny and chock full of oil all day long.  Invest in a good leave in conditioner.  I rotate from leaving my Cholesterol in to using my Pantene Daily Repair mask as a leave-in conditioner.  Dry, brittle hair equals split ends, breakage, and damage.

4. Protect your hair - Invest in protective styles, like pony tails, cute quick up-dos and keep your hair off your shoulder or pillow.  INvest in a good satin pillow case or a satin head cap.  Use as little heat as possible and let your hair air dry.

5.  Feel free to experiment with new styles – I never thought I could fro it out at work.  But as long as my hair isnt too crazy I feel free to express my hair creativity from Bantu knots all the way to my Fro-hawk.  If you style your hair with protective Bantu knots, two strand twists and let them out after they are dry, your hair has a wonderful style

Wanted to introduce you to a state of the art all natural product line called Natures' Natural. Recently I used their "Twist and Grow Loc Gel", which I tried, and I am very excited and pleased. The twists set in two hours and gave me a tight pattern to my hair. Overnight when I untwisted my hair, I got a very defined, shiny, twist out. Some of the strands of my hair are so defined it looks like the hair one purchases for weaving. My hair has never been that defined, even when I use Ms. Jessie's. She states that the ingredients in her product is "designed to strengthen, repair and bring fullness to each strand of hair and stop frizzes." I can attest to the fact that it really eliminates frizzes. I have very kinky, 4B hair and this gel worked a miracle on my hair. This is an amazing gel! It looks as if I went under a dryer, I did not! She also carries a Sheen Hold, which I plan to be trying in the very near future. She states that this special spray brings extra ordinary shine and hold to all hair textures!

Another product that I have tried is Aloe Conditioning Moisture Mist, one of Nature's Natural's most popular products for twists and locs, which is literally "liquid gold", as it has the very higly prized argan or morrocan oil in its formulaztion. Chatto is the only one using this highly prized oil in her products. EVERY TIME YOU USE ALOE CONDITIONING MOISTURE MIST, YOU ARE LITERALLY INFUSING STRENGTH and Moisture INTO YOU HAIR, and it detangles too! In comparasion I had used the Jane Carter's Revitalizing Moisture for a daily spritz which made my hair frizzy and tangled. The Aloe Moisture Mist detangles the hair when used.

For wash & gos she offers "6-Plus Formula 1" to bring out the curl pattern in naturally curly and wavy hair. For tighter curls it brings moisture and manageability.

All I can say about Nature's Natural Hair products is look out Miss Jessie's!

  • Great Tips. Number 1 is definitely at the right spot. It is so important to love your hair. It's unique.

I love your tips, #1 is SO important and to stem off of that another thing to keep in mind is to be patient and gentle with your hair. Take your time when combing and styling it, your hair will love you for it later by not breaking off as much, for instance. And like GoldenAh said be flexible with your routine. Length, weather and life present different needs for our hair.
  • You will also discover that the longer your hair is, should you desire more length, your routine and the products you use will have to change. Your curls may tighten or may loosen up. It may seem to get harder or easier to take care of.

    Our hair is so interesting.

Best of luck with your journey.
