In Love With My Natural

Love Your Hair
So, as most of you know, I have been natural now for an entire year. I transitioned using a weave for a year and then have been rocking my perm free hair for a year. Don’t get me wrong, it has been a slight struggle learning about my hair and finding the products that work best for me. But, it has been well worth the trip. Here are a few tips for those of you contemplating going natural, those who are new, and those who have been natural for years. Feel free to add any of your own personal tips.
1. Love Your Hair - Every natural beauty is different. Some may have big curls, deep waves, or kinky locs. Don’t wish for another’s tresses. The longer you search for what you don’t have or try out products that don’t fit your hair type, the more damage you will do to your hair. Once you love YOUR hair the natural transition becomes that much easier. You can also achieve the curly look if you want through styles created while wet, including Bantu knots, two strand twists and more.
2. Expensive Isn’t Always Best – So you want to use only juices and berries on your hair. That is fine but realize that grocery store or over the counter products work just as well as those expensive products you buy offline. Recently, my hair has never looked, the breakage has slowed drastically. I use Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Conditioner, Shea Butter and Mango Cholesterol, Cantu Shea Butter and Olive Oil Moisturizer, Oyin Handmade Greg Juice, and Shea Butter for my ends. 3/4 of these products can be found at your local grocery store or Walmart and are under $5. Oyin can be found online and costs only $11 ( I will write a review shortly when I try the Juices and Berries version). I have recieved more compliments when using these products than I have with all of my magic hair potions.
3. Moisture, Moisture, Moisture - Natural hair ( and Relaxed hair for that matter) requires a lot of moisture to retain its elasticity, shine, and remain healthy, especially during the summer months. Find the best moisture for your hair. My hair loves Shea Butter as a sealant for my ends. In the hot Las Vegas weather, my mane remains shiny and chock full of oil all day long. Invest in a good leave in conditioner. I rotate from leaving my Cholesterol in to using my Pantene Daily Repair mask as a leave-in conditioner. Dry, brittle hair equals split ends, breakage, and damage.
4. Protect your hair - Invest in protective styles, like pony tails, cute quick up-dos and keep your hair off your shoulder or pillow. INvest in a good satin pillow case or a satin head cap. Use as little heat as possible and let your hair air dry.
5. Feel free to experiment with new styles – I never thought I could fro it out at work. But as long as my hair isnt too crazy I feel free to express my hair creativity from Bantu knots all the way to my Fro-hawk. If you style your hair with protective Bantu knots, two strand twists and let them out after they are dry, your hair has a wonderful style
