Hop Back On That Diet Wagon

Get In ShapeMany of you may be wondering what happened to all the good diet and workout advice you all used to see here every week. The truth is, I have been skipping the gym and my inner fat girl has taken over and been eating every snack from here to New York.

I have received a few requests for some motivational tips to help everyone (including myself) get back on the wagon. Like to hear it, here it goes.

1. Jump In Slowly -so you ate all the Girl Scout Cookies, Hostess has you on speed dial, and that pasta place near your house has your table on lock within 5 minutes notice. It is ok. You don’t have to quit cold turkey. Wean yourself off all the bad food you have been eating. This week give up cookies, next week give up pasta. That way you don’t feel like Pookie the crack head looking for your next hit.   The more you feel like you are losing the less likely you are to take control of your eating habits.

2. The Gym Is Your Friend – Your elliptical machine misses you, those free weights are calling your name, and your workout buddies miss sharing that protein shake with you at the health bar.  No weight loss regime is complete without hitting the gym.  Skipping the gym is like hitting the lottery with only 3 of the numbers, you get cheated.  The best way to see results is sweating it up a bit, the more you see those pounds and inches vanish, the more you will stick with your program.

3.  Eat 5-6 Times A Day – I know it seems like a lot but it is really not.  For those of you throwing down at the dinner table one to two times a day, you are cheating your self.  Studies have shown that eating 5-6 small portion meals a day is proven to aid dramatically with weight loss.  So eat breakfast, a snack, lunch, a snack and then dinner, followed by a snack if you are still hungry.  Remember to stop eating at least 3 hours before your bedtime, or suffer the consequences of a sluggish metabolism.

4. Get a Fitness Buddy – There is nothing like a little healthy competition to get you in gear.  Your fitness buddy is there to keep you in check.  Start up a challenge amongst yourselves and determine fun rewards that don’t center around food.  Such as the loser buys the winner a ticket to Six Flags, or money towards a new outfit from their favorite store.  When you see your workout buddy up and raring to go, or keeping up with their fitness goals, I guarantee your competitive spirit won’t leave you lagging behind.

5. Have Fun – This is the most important tip of them all.  If you are not having fun, you are definitely going to fall off the wagon.  When fitness becomes a chore, it is no longer fun.  I hated chores as a kid and I know I don’t want to do any now.  Keep your workout fresh by trying new machines, rent a new work out tape, try some YouTube work out videos, or hit the streets with your workout buddy.  Try new healthy recipies, but don’t deny yourself what you want.  If you remember portion control and keeping yourself in check, you are well on your way to achieving any fitness goal!!

So here is to good luck to all of us!!

Get some exercise equipment for the house. I've got dumbells and a yoga ball. At commercials I'll get up and do a lil' something.
  • Buy a sexy outfit that is too small and work to get into it.
While talking on the phone, get up out the house and walk around the neighborhood.

Shop out the perimeter of the grocery store and avoid the isles. The bakery, veggies, meats are all located on the perimeter and are likely more healthy than what's in the middle.
Know your weaknesses (french fries) and avoid them.
Reward yourself when you lose weight - instead of buying food, buy a cute shirt/dress/pants.
