Cheap and Easy Makeup Tips

2009 is the year for being your best self. With all this economic uncertainty we all could afford to save a few dollars here and there. Here are a few tips to look like a million dollars without putting a dent in your wallet.

1. Makeup brushes- A good brush is like manna from the gods. A little known secret is that makeup brushes are really paintbrushes with fancy names. Paintbrushes and your fancy brushes are often times made by the same manufacturer. So that brush you paid $30 for costs $3 at an art or craft supply store. The paintbrushes are slightly larger than makeup brushes but the bristles are the same quality. I usually keep 2 sets of brushes. My travel compact size (usually a holiday gift set from Sephora or M.A.C ) and a home set. Here is a great video to show you a little more of what I am talking about.

2. Buy Your Makeup From EBay- Everyone assumes Ebay means used. Not by a long shot. The Ebay of today is a wholesaler’s dream. Many people sell from their homes, buy in bulk, and sell to you on Ebay. Hardly any used makeup products are sold on Ebay. You have the option of buying now without bidding or you can bid. Its much easier to bid on items whose auction is almost over than have monitor your bidding. (In other words sneak in and win at the last minute). Buying on Ebay is also a way to test out products without paying full price. Everyone hates buyer’s remorse.

Remember to check the retail value of your items at the product’s website to make sure you don’t overbid or overpay!  Also, look for reputable sellers who have a history of providing legitimate makeup at reasonable prices.  Don’t fall for the fakes.

3. Cosmetics Company Outlet
Sadly, not everyone is fortunate enough to know the greatness of the Cosmetics Company Outlet (CCO). The CCO is a veritable mecca of products owned by the Estee Lauder company, all offered at discounted rates (often as much as 30 percent off). CCO stores carry these brands:

MAC
Bobbi Brown
Prescriptives
Origins
Estee Lauder
Clinique
Of course, for a makeup addict, a list like this is enough to send them speeding off to the nearest outlet mall, which is where CCO stores are located. Find one near you by visiting the Outlet Bound store locator.

some of these tips are a bit drastic. There are some cheap makeup retailers out there that arnt well known. Have a look at collection2000 makeup range.
  • Nice tips, especially on paintbrushes and eBay. I suggest if you find the paintbrush handle a bit long, just saw it off and file the top. Some DIY does help!
  • Great tip on the makeup brushes. I will be passing that along to all of my friends.
  • Wow! I never knew that about brushes, but it makes sense. Mental note taken!
And yes! the eBay point is so true. One great thing is that you can order products from various brands from one sellers who will sometimes combine shipping. Some sellers will even include samples of additional products with your order.
