Recession Alert: 5 Holiday Shopping Tips

So everyone and their daddy has a sale going on. Doesn’t it feel like Hustle Man is trying to sell you some side deal in a back alley or “Holla, Holla, Holla atcha?” Every store has some gimmick to force you to spend a little money on allegedly “Great Deals,” “Rock Bottom Prices,” and “Super Steals.” Well, every deal isn’t a great one and P.O.S.H. is here to give you a few tips. This holiday season, we want you to come out of these stores spending less money and walking away with more loot than after the Rodney King riots.
- Find a Coupon – Never, and I repeat Never, go to a store without a coupon if possible. Before the recession I ALWAYS printed out coupons before hitting the store. If you want to shop at Express, or Macy’s or whatever, hit up google and type in “Macy’s Coupons” or whatever store you are staking out. Make sure the coupons that come up are valid for the day you are shopping. Sites like RetailMeNot.com and CouponCabin.com are also great one stop coupon shops.
- Split Up Your Purchases, Get into Super Sneaky Mode- no one ever saved a buck by being totally upfront. If you have a coupon for $35 off a $75 purchase and a coupon for $25 off your purchase, then split up everything into two purchases. The first purchase can be the $75 purchase and then use your $25 off coupon for the remaining balance of your purchases. If the store clerks act ignant, either ask them to hold your purchases and go to another associate after you browse a few more stores, or hit another mall and use your coupon.
- Buy Online – If you have a store that you love and you always purchase from, sign up for their newsletters. These flyers used to be annoying inbox clutter but the sale and special customer deals you get online are magical. You can get free shipping and up to 50% off certain items with inbox mailers. You can beat the lines, not cuss anyone out and get some of the same merchandise you would in stores.
- Make a List – The luxury of roaming around a department store or strolling through a mall is wonderful, but that can only lead to unnecessary purchases. Before you set out on your shopping trip, decide what exactly it is you want or need. No matter how large or small the item, making a list will keep your shopping fixed and focused.
- Do Some Online Digging- Anything can be found online. Before you make your purchases price things out online. Found out which store will give you the best deal, coupons included. For instance, I wanted a perfume set of the perfume I wear every day. The holidays are the best time to buy make up sets, perfume gift sets, and beauty products. I went to Macy’s and found my perfume for $65. I went to Dillards and my same perfume set was being offered for 20% off. So my set actually rang up at $53. Hey, that’s gas money or chips toward another gift.
- (Bonus Tip) No One Said You Had to Buy For Everyone Else, Splurge On Yourself As Well- Christmas time is the best time to buy those boots, that Wii, flatscreen, or trinket you have had your eye one. This recession is making it a buyers market for certain items. Check your budget, see what you are willing to spend, scope out your deals and pillage!!
