Phylicia Rashad Next Spokeswoman for Jenny Craig

Phylicia Rashad, is the latest actress to be tapped as a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig, PEOPLE  Magazine reports.  Ms. Rashad joins Queen Latifah as an African American spokes woman for the product.

I am glad that Ms. Rashad has joined the campaign.  There are others who would disagree with me but I think that her endorsement is purely positive.

There aren’t many role models in the Black Community when it comes to weight loss.  Due to her Cosby show fame, I think Ms. Rashad is the perfect person to speak to the Black Community.  She has a broad fan base from kids who used to watch the Cosby show to grown men and women in her age bracket.

I will be honest.  Queen Latifah’s campaign didn’t light that fire in the Black community to care about their weight and make a positive change.   Queen Latifah,  successfully shed 20 pounds on the program.  I applaud her loss however, 20 pounds isn’t enough to start a movement.  Hopefully Ms. Rashad’s presence will show help.  Everyone loves Clair Huxtable right?

Earlier this week, Rashad, 60, was nominated for a Golden Globe for outstanding lead actress in miniseries for her role in Raisin in the Sun.

She is NOT fat - she looks great! Signing her as a Jenny Craig spokesperson is just plain silly. Now women in their 60's need to be rail-thin? A couple of extra pounds keeps your face looking fresh and young at that age.

Honestly, I don't think Ms. Rashad has the pull either. At least not for my peer group (24-35). I would look at a 60 year old woman and say that she's overweight because she's had children, she's less active, her motabolism has slowed down. I'm not overweight; however, I don't look to her for cues on self-image.

I think somebody like Jennifer Hudson would have more of an appeal to a younger age group. And adopting a healthy lifestyle should become a habit at a young age. Fit black women in the spotlight (Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Beyonce ect...) should highlight what they do in life to maintain a healthy weight.

There's a double edge sword for black women when it comes to weight/health. Because our standard of beauty is not defined by skin and bones, we are often praised for having junk in the trunk and other traits of being overweight. We are not necessarily encouraged to stay healthy. Grandmothers are known for giving you extra food when they think you are thin; however, you might have a healthy BMI.

Matter of fact come to think of it, I've probably maintained a healthy weight because I grew up around and compared myself to white girls. That's another story for another day.
