Maxwell Concert Review
Heeeees Baaaack!! The crowd laughed, cried, danced, and women threw their panties. All in all, it was a great night to be had by all.
I attended the October 31, 2008 concert in Las Vegas, and I must say, this was probably one of the best concerts I have ever attended. The sexy R&B crooner returned to the scene to tour after a six year hiatus. The tour was to give fans a taste and to promote his anticipated new release “Black Summers’ Night,” a trilogy of studio albums that the artist expects to release over the next three years.
The first installment, titled “Black,” is due out sometime this year on Columbia, and streaming audio of the first track from the set, “Pretty Wings,” can be heard at Maxwell’s MySpace page. The following pieces of the trilogy, “Summers’” and “Night,” are planned to follow next year and in 2010.
Maxwell performed for almost two hours, received two standing ovations, and performed an encore. The band and background singers were dressed in attire reminiscent of bands straight from the Harlem Renaissance in tuxedos and flowing chiffon ball gowns.
I felt like I was reliving a scene out of The Five Heartbeats. Women screamed, cried, stood on their feet, and gave Maxwell a warm and inviting welcome home. He even had the men on their feet cheering and dancing right along with him. Maxwell kept us guessing and songs you have sung for a good 10 years felt new and fresh. The crowd sang along to all his hits and were entranced by his new joints. The brotha even sang a little to us in Spanish. Maxwell is hilarious and oozes that same sex appeal live that you feel on his albums. He never stopped moving, danced up a storm, and kept the ladies entertained with his sexy moves and innuendos.
Jazmine Sullivan opened for Maxwell and her deep sensuous sound wowed the crowd. We bust out windows, told him we needed him bad and voiced our fears through her music. Ms. Sullivan did not disappoint with her live performance and I am looking forward to more of her work. Go pick up her new album Fearless!!
