Get Involved, Election 2008

I went to my first Voter Protection meeting today to help make sure everyone receives equal treatment at the polls. As I sat in that room I realized that we are on the forefront of history. I realized this election is comparable to the Civil Rights movement. Today I sat in a room today filled with white people all dedicated to electing a Black man as president. They haven’t forgotten Barack is black, but these people have looked past color to support what a Black man promises to do with the country.
Sitting in that room, I felt like I was a part of the meetings organizing the Freedom Marches of the 60’s. People came together then to fight for what they believed in, basic human equality and equal rights. That belief in equality and a better America is what is driving the campaign in 2008. I always wondered what our parents and grandparents who marched and organized the Movement felt. I wondered how they could come together and march, sit-in, and demonstrate knowing the dangers ahead but never knowing if their efforts would be in vain. They did it because they couldn’t stand by and let the world happen to them. They realized that in order for change to happen, you have to stand up for what you believe and participate. Our parents and grandparents realized that if they sat at home their children would never receive quality educations or live the lives of their counterparts.
2008 is no different than the 1960’s. You won’t be lynched for participating and the level of danger isn’t the same. However, the priciple is the same. If you sit on your couch you can’t complain and you can’t tell your children you tried to change the world in 2008. It’s not every day that you are presented the opportunity to participate in something historic and life changing. Today It felt great to be a part of something and that I can tell the story from personal experience. Regardless of the outcome of this election, I can say I did my small part and particpated in one of the most historical events of our time.
Here is to being on the front lines of history. What are you doing for change…..the clock is ticking.
