Cheap Dates During the Recession

Game Night
Game Night

Banks are tanking, business is bad, the Dow is plummeting, and money is tight.  Fall is here and you are looking for a few ways to date and not break your bank.  Fellas, here is where the cheap date can be a direct score for you.  Its time to put on your thinking cap and use your imagination.

Game Night – Its time to break out Rock Band, Madden, or any of your other favorite games and challenge your date to a match.  Its free, you can get some snacks, and let the competition rev up.  Make it really competitive and offer the winner a prize….or the loser has to follow through on a dare.  Everyone loves free prizes….its better than the State Fair or arcade!

Go grab some coffee- Starbucks, here you come! This is a perfect first date location instead of snazzy restaurants or the movies.  Coffee is cheap, even when you snazzify it at Starbucks.  Coffee shops are places where you are forced to talk to your date and get to know them.  Find out their likes and dislikes, try to get a feel for who they really are. I really believe that these are the best first dates. You didn’t drop a lot of dough and if it doesn’t work out no harm no foul. Fellas, if she thinks you are cheap for a coffee date as a first date….you might not want to date her. Sorry ladies.

Go out for dessert – This is a way to enhance any date or use dessert as a date closer.  You have taken a walk, gone for coffee, made dinner at home, or stopped off at a bookstore.  Going for some cheesecake, ice cream or pie is a perfect date closer.  The two of you are feeling all warm and fuzzy about each other and you don’t want the date to end. Also sweets may start gearing your mind toward other racy (and free) activities, if the two of you are that far along in your dating.

Hit the Road

Throw a Dart at the Map – Get a map of your city or if you are feeling adventurous, a map of the state.  Throw a dart and take a road trip.  Go some place the two of you have never been before.  If you really want to travel, make a scavenger hunt trip.  Museums and art galleries have cheap days, some being free to enter. Go to the library and look at the papers to see upcoming attractions. Use vouchers and coupons to get the best deals.

You and your boo night – Take a walk in the park, make a picnic, bring a telescope and stargaze.  If you are near water, hit the marina and watch the ships pass.  Rent a movie, make your own popcorn and snuggle up. It’s as cheap as Chips.  Have a bake off competition and fellas one night you prepare your hook-em dish and the next night she does the same.  See who is the winner and determine what the prize will be.

Couples Date – Make it a game night or think of a cool date like that keeps everyone’s costs down.  A friend of mine shows films with his projector out on his lawn.  Its a date outside of the box, its cheap and everyone can just hang out and watch a movie together.

Whatever you do….don’t let Uncle Sam steal your dating fun!  Got any other cheap date suggestions?

  • Ummm road trips during a recession? Gas may be coming down in price but it's still expensive. I'm fairly certain that not too many folks are early adopters of the gas-conserving hybrids. I'd eliminate this idea from my date book, and replace it with nature walks and other free activities.
