Product Review: Kinky Curly

As you all know, I have been growing out my relaxer.  My method to grow out my hair was to wear a weave.  When I took out the weave, voila,  I was instantly natural and had no clue about caring for my hair.

I admit to being a product junkie.  If someone raves about something, I am the first fool to say “Gimme two of those!”  I realized every product isn’t for every curl.  What works for one person will not work for another.   I determined that my hair falls in the 4a category and I wanted to try products recommended to help those with my curl pattern.

I am really having a problem with my natural hair knotting and wrapping around my straight edges.  I have a lot of straight ends from my  relaxer and pressing my hair.  So, I decided to try out Kinky Curly’s Knot Today and Curling Custard.  I was really impressed because the product contain no alcohol and all natural ingredients.

KNOT TODAY TMis a creamy herbal conditioner and detangler designed to
smooth the cuticle and remove knots, snarls and tangles from thick curly textured
hair.
Can be used as a regular rinse out conditioner for wavy hair or as a leave-in for
thicker curlier hair types.  An excellent product to use after removing braids and extensions.

I heart Knot Today!!  My hair was instantly conditioned and my snarls melted away.  My hair remained moisturized for days.  I think I did the happy dance every morning when I woke up!  I also smoothed in a small amount of the product on my refresher days.  I would lightly spray my hair with a water bottle and then add a tiny amount to areas that were starting to knot up.  Magic  I tell you…..pure magic!

Curling Custard .  So far this is my favorite.  I have used the Custard when doing my twist outs and I recently use it when I let my hair air dry.  Because I am a 4a, my curls are somewhat tight and about the circumference of a straw in some areas and a coffee stirrer in others.  My hair starts of tight and then becomes frizzy and undefined.  I was looking for a product to hold my curl and shine.  The Custard provided both!  I would recommend following the instructions.  If you use too much the product can make your hair hard.

I heart Kinky Curly!!

Here’s a video I found on You Tube on how to apply the Curling Custard.   It can be gooey if you use too much.  You might want to try on semi dry hair to avoid the shrinkage when you dry.

Any other products you would recommend for maintaining knot free tresses?  What products do you use to maintain your natural style?

I use Knot Today and KCCC everyday and I love this stuff! How can I prevent shrinkage and frizz at the gym? After a workout my hair just does not look the same. Is there something I can use along with the 2 products that would help?

Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercream is great for twists, moisturizes hair and great curl definition. So far this is only thing that works on my 4C hair! I like it because my hair does not knot at the ends when I use it.

  • Oh wow, I love the way your hair came out! You guys have me excited, I have no idea what my hair type is (lol) but I'm going to go find out.

I wonder if I can use Kinky Curling Custard? My problem is frizz. My hair gets frizzy and tangled. I just ordered mixed-chicks but I've yet to find a product that works on my hair. I also don't want to make the curl longer... I'd actually prefer to make it tighter (more bounce) and more defined (cut the frizz and tangles). Do you guys recommend any products for that?
  • Xsara, I don't see any problem with you using the Kinky Curly on hair your length. I think it might be easier for you to use than it is for me. It should be very easy to do a wash and go style and the produt will moisturize and hold the curls in place so they won't appear frizzy.

I would caution you and say less product is more, especially with shorter hair.
You dont want the product to become goopy or extra hard.

I have a 4a too. But my hair is now 10 cm. Is that too short? Can i try the kccc?

If you use too much product (my first time doing so) and the hair becomes hard, wash your hair within a few days. If you don't the product may cause tangling because of the build up.

I am currently using the knot today to work out the built up areas.

    Still love it!

Ohh love this post, I'll have to check this product out. Two others I loved and used in my transition are Ouidad, the high humidity cream is great for steamy summer days and also Curl Friends, smells good but I feel like it works if your hair is more course, mine is super fine and frizzes easy but it works fine for me in the spring/fall when there's less moisture in the air.
