While Black women need to lose weight (*for the sake of THEIR health, NOT the sake of someone's erection*), I heard that on average Black women do have denser bones and more muscle... don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, it makes it THAT much harder to lose pounds on a very general scale like the BMI. That's the same problem body builders face when they measure up on the BMI.

i think that it is just important overall to maintain a better lifestyle with healthier eating. i am in college, and have developed health problems due not only to eating, but much to stress and overworking. i talked with my mom and sisters, some real talk, and i feel more determined to get myself together. it's more than just my "image", it's my life at stake. i'm a woman of Faith, and my body is a temple, so i have to keep it together. it's important to me, even at my young age. the article may have some harshness to it (especially in the beginning) but even reading it, i had to realize that it's not about looking as "hot" as Beyonce or any other star for that matter. it's about tking care of me and taking the right steps to improve because i care. i want to say thanks to all those who are also remaining positive. it's encouraging :)

If you are committed to losing weight, you must make adjustments to your diet. The walking is good, but you may want to consider trying to prepare food differently (ie using olive oil instead of butter in some cases, drinking more water, trading in huge fatty deserts for some honey with cinnamon, and most importantly exercising portion control).

I'm amazed, I'm 5'4" 120lbs. 360 is 3 times my weight. My life would be drastically different.

Hi, I am celebrating my birthday tomorrow. I am to the point in my life i need to loose some weight. I have the same problem like everyone else, fat around the stomach. I am 5′4″, my weight is around 360. I hate to exercise and i don’t like certain vegetables. Now and then i may go on the track and do a few miles and it helps my breathing. Should i continue with the track for a while? Narconon Vistabay

Why do you feel the need to "teach" us? Are if we are so dumb and ignorant that we don't know that what we are putting in our mouths may/will lead to health problems. Why is it presented in such a mean-spirited and demeaning way? White sisters are not approached and talked to this way.

As for body size there is a distinct difference in bone size and muscle size. We are structurally larger than white women a fact that is unaccounted for in weight tables. Hug a white sister. Better yet have an open discussion about body size and why she is more likely to develop osteoporosis. Studies show that the diet that helps white females lose weight, does not help black females.

As for your article it demeans us because its tone talks to us like we are stupid and you are intelligent. The tone is mean-spirited and demeaning.
I hear it in every day life blacks talking to other blacks in a disrespectful tone.

When we address the issues of poverty, mental and physical abuse, and self esteem we will not need food as a tranquilizer. In the mean time sisters work on your health issues, but never let another black person talk to you in a demeaning manner. Recognize when you are being marginalized by another black who thinks they are better and walk away immediately.

Yes it is a shame that another black person is emotionally abusive to other blacks.

I would like to just respond that we as black people/women first have to be informed about what to eat, drink and cook and to actually (as sad as it may be) taught how to properly cook and prepare food. I have found that as a black woman (carribean decent) that alot of why we are obese and have a malfunctioned mentality of thinking relating to weight in general is because we think that we can name it "thickness". Most black women as well as black people have been raised on the "droppings of slavery eatings". The way in which we cook and the amount of what we do eat is very unhealthy. If we as a people change this then, slowly by slowly we can change our lives and the lives of the next generation. I am currently 5'5" and 170lbs. I walk for 1.5 hours 3 times a week and I have completely changed my eating habits along with my preparation habits. I am WELL shaped and TONED. But, I am not finished! I have very little body fat and hardly a pinch of tummy but, I am not done with me and my healthy lifestylye that will hopefully last a lifetime pertaining to my life. I used to be very small and very athletic when in high school and middle school. I enjoyed the weight but, I rather live longer. It is true that skinny women can be unhealthy because I have a 17 year old daughter and a 36 year old female cousin that are both unhealthy. I have my daughter to run the track with me and she nearly fell out at 110lbs!

We as black women do have to love ourselves but, it starts with researching what is proper for us to eat and what not to eat. Changing those eating habits will help and slow down on the sweets and the snacking. Find an outlet to release the stress in a healthy manner to combat the belly fat horome that is triggered when stress is present in our lives. When we take into effect our status quo in this country of the USA and the foods that come at us stemming from the fast food and then some, then WE as a people have to take into account of what we are buying in the grocery store, how we cook it, how we grow from it, and best of all, how will it be processed in our bodies and the after effect of that enjoyment of the food that we just consumed. So, I leave us with this in mind:

"I am hungry, so what can I eat that is healthy for me and that will satisfy me without looking for death early caused by my own hands?"

There is no question of taste due to ethnicity; Beyonce's body = scorching, Monique body = OBESE....and both are black...go figure...

Ridethisblackcowboy, you are an idiot. There are plenty of beautiful healthy black women and many with no attitude. I have dated both black women and white women and have enjoyed both...equal opportunity. Maybe you are not as handsome as you think and the beautiful black women don't pay you any attention..then again...you are also an idiot.

Well, one would think that by now BW would better understand this critical ongoing health issue regarding being overweight. But, if one just looks around its clear that 'still' far too many just don't seem to get it! I applauud those that are really starting to address this important situation, but let's be honest most BW aren't listening! Well, as for Monique she's not helping at all with her continual rants about "love comes from within" and all that nonsense! The real facts are that BW are dying! She can't even lose weight herself! I know she tried, but was unsuccessful so was Queen Latifah..that's why she was dropped by Jenny Craig. Sorry ladies there's a big (no pun intended) difference between just being "FAT" and being THICK! Sorry, that's a dead, and also a tired excuse ! BW are the most overweight women for their gender then all races of women today in the US! It's also way out of control! but, don't just take my word for that...go check the stats for yourself! I'm a BM and to be brutally honest I'm sick and tired of seeing all these BW both young and older that are just plain FAt! It's just totally embrassing! BW are dying! Enough already!

Well, one would think that by now BW would better understand this critical ongoing health issue regarding being overweight. But, if one just looks around its clear that 'still' far too many just don't seem to get it! I applauud those that are really starting to address this important situation, but let's be honest most BW aren't listening!
